Fast context
O’Ward needed that one. His Mid-Ohio win ended a 15-race victory drought and gave him his first podium of the season, a strange sentence for a driver who was already fifth in the standings. He led 45 laps at Mid-Ohio after leading only 19 across the first 10 races.
Palou’s weekend was less spectacular but still extremely Palou. His streak of five straight poles ended, he did not lead a lap for the first time since Phoenix, and he still finished fifth. That is why the power rankings did not move him. On an off-weekend by his standards, the damage was mostly cosmetic.
Lundgaard is the driver with the most dramatic tension around him. He took pole and finished second at Mid-Ohio, has finished second, first, first and second on permanent road courses this season, and is now the paddock’s hottest free agent after Arrow McLaren’s 2027 lineup announcement left him out.
What changes next
The July 19 Nashville race should tell us whether the contenders can make Palou defend on ovals, not just on road and street courses. That is the championship test that actually matters now.
