The brief

  • What changed: Fabio Quartararo has signed with Honda HRC for the 2027 and 2028 MotoGP seasons.
  • Why it matters: The 2021 world champion is moving into the championship’s new 850cc era after building his premier-class career with Yamaha.
  • What to watch: Honda has now paired the Quartararo announcement with David Alonso’s move into MotoGP, although Alonso’s exact team is still open.

A clean break at the technical reset

Quartararo’s next contract is more than a team switch. It lands at the same moment MotoGP enters its 850cc era, giving Honda a proven champion around whom it can build the next technical cycle.

The official announcement describes a factory Honda HRC seat for both 2027 and 2028. That detail matters: this is not a short experiment or a satellite landing. Honda is committing its works programme to a rider who has already shown he can turn qualifying speed into a title campaign.

Quartararo’s premier-class résumé currently includes 11 wins, 32 podiums and 21 poles. The headline remains the 2021 title, but the broader point is continuity: Honda is buying experience for a reset year, not simply chasing a famous name.

Yamaha loses its reference point

The move also closes the chapter on Quartararo’s Yamaha years. MotoGP’s official rider-market coverage notes that the Frenchman joined the premier class in 2019 and immediately made an impact, taking a pole in his fourth race.

Honda’s timing is aggressive. The manufacturer announced David Alonso from 2027 on the same day, but Alonso’s destination—factory Honda HRC or LCR—has not yet been confirmed. Quartararo therefore arrives as the clear anchor while the second piece of the structure is still being placed.

The 2026 championship will decide how much momentum Quartararo carries across. The 2027 contract says Honda believes the answer will be enough.
