The last lap belonged to Norris
Norris timed the decisive effort perfectly. He crossed the line with a 1:17.207, avoiding late yellow flags caused by Verstappen’s spin and George Russell’s stoppage. Hamilton had been provisionally second and could not improve, while Leclerc secured third and Antonelli fourth before the stewards intervened.
At a circuit where passing is difficult, the lap was already a major advantage. The penalties turned it into something more: Norris now has clean air, Leclerc moves onto the front row and Piastri starts ahead of the driver who impeded him.
Mercedes loses two places it had earned
Hamilton’s penalty came after he blocked Piastri at Turn 1 while the McLaren was on a push lap. The stewards said Hamilton was travelling significantly slower on the racing line and forced Piastri to abandon his attempt. Hamilton therefore moves from second to fifth.
Antonelli’s case was different but produced the same grid drop. Formula1.com reported that the championship leader did not slow sufficiently through the yellow-flag sector after Verstappen’s spin. He falls to seventh, behind Russell, while Hadjar inherits eighth.
The result is a front group with no simple tactical script. Norris has the position, Ferrari has the launch opportunity, Piastri has track space and Verstappen has a clean view of the cars ahead. Mercedes still has pace, but it has made Sunday harder before the lights even go out.
