Norris won the race in the long game
The start was not completely straightforward. Oscar Piastri jumped Leclerc and briefly put pressure on his McLaren team-mate, while the Ferraris and Verstappen fought behind them. Norris survived the opening phase, then made the race about pace and tyre life rather than a single defensive move.
Formula1.com’s report says Norris was able to extend his stints further than expected. Fresh tyres then gave him the margin he needed, and the McLaren driver controlled the closing laps to take his and McLaren’s first Grand Prix victory of 2026.
It was also Norris’ first win as the reigning world champion—an odd sentence that captures how quickly this season has changed shape.
Mercedes leaves with points and questions
Antonelli’s third place kept Mercedes in the strategic conversation and strengthened his position at the top of the standings. Hamilton fought Verstappen for the podium but lost ground after the pit sequence, then finished behind Leclerc once his five-second penalty was applied.
Russell’s recovery was quieter but impressive: after dropping as low as 21st, he came back to seventh. Hadjar was sixth, Lawson eighth, Hulkenberg ninth and Lindblad tenth. Piastri, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas were the three retirements.
The summer break therefore begins with McLaren back on the top step, Mercedes still leading the title picture through Antonelli, and Ferrari left to explain why its Friday pace became fourth and fifth on Sunday.
